Basildon Aquathlon 2017

Due to some last minute cancellations, the East Essex Aquathlon at Basildon was only represented by 4 members of Tri-Force in the Tri 3, Tri 2 and Tri 1 races. The day proved to be warm and sunny and all 4 members were eager to get going. Christy had an unfortunate incident with her tri-suit zip but other competitors were on hand to lend a replacement.

In the Tri 3 race, Jess and Christy had their normal battles. Both girls are good runners but Christy managed to extend her lead by 32 seconds to finish 2nd overall. Jess had a great run and just narrowly missed out on 3rd place by 16 seconds.

It was left to Jonathan Bint to fly the flag for Tri-Force Junior Boys, competing in the Tri 2 younger age band. The event was popular and 29 boys started on the day. Jonathan came out of the swim in 22nd place but lost some time in transition after misplacing his towel. An 18th place on the run moved him further up the field to finish 19th overall.

Our final competitor was Rebecca Bint in the Tristar 1 girls race which yet again had a large field of 27 competitors. Rebecca is only in her second season of triathlons having moved up from the Start category from last year. She had a steady swim, coming out in 21st place, and a swift transition to get onto the run course. For most of the run course, Rebecca didn’t have anyone near her. However for the last 200m she was chased down by another girl. The commentator focused on this battle and to the delight of the crowd, we saw both girls kicking hard to the finishing line. It was great to see such a competitive spirit in Rebecca. Overall, Rebecca finished 21st and said that she thoroughly enjoyed the race.
